Church readies for concert Saturday, November 29, 2014 - Updated: 4:08 AM
MAYFIELD -- On the first day of the Advent, the Mayfield United Methodist Church will host a Christmas concert to kick the holiday season off on a high note. Minister Jerry Oliver invited local organist Malcom Kogut, pianist Edward Goodemote and soloists Amy Protho and Byron Nilson to entertain community members with religious and secular Christmas songs. The event, called "From Our House to Yours," will start with a luncheon at noon Sunday at Fellowship Hall, 19 North Main St. Oliver said various soups and sandwiches will be served during this time. At 2 p.m., the guests will be led into the church to listen to the local artists play festive tunes and participate in a sing-a-long. The concert will end with a dessert reception, in which folks can meet and mingle with the performers.
"I am honored to have that kind of talent coming to Mayfield," Oliver said. "This is something different."
A group of parishioners were busy Friday setting up Christmas trees and decorating the interior with sparkly lights and purple tool in celebration of the Advent. Donna Hyme, her nephew Tim, her husband Howard, and friend Jim Adams started organizing the decorations Monday, and will be there today to put final touches on the decor.
"This will get them in the Christmas spirit," Donna Hyme said. "This is something families will enjoy." Oliver said the event is and free to the public, however, there will be a basket to accept free-will offerings. He said this is the church's fourth year hosting the event, and it gives the public a chance to socialize, as well as celebrate the beginning of Advent.
Both Oliver and Donna Hyme said organist Malcom Kogut provides quite the treat to listen to. Additionally, he said Byron Nilson and Amy Protho are well-known entertainers who traditionally perform show tunes. "Malcolm is a genius and so is Ed. They are both exceptionally talented," said Oliver. "They will do a couple things together with both of our soloists."
Oliver said Sunday's event is for both children and their families. In addition to musical productions, he said young folks are invited to listen to a Christmas book readings. "We want people's minds to be focused on the season," Oliver said. "It is a good way to get it started."
